Omar Lazo Campaign Certified For Public Matching Funds

Wheaton, MD: Wheaton community leader, activist, small business owner, and District 6 County Council candidate Omar Lazo has announced that he has filed and been approved and certified for public matching funds through Montgomery County’s Public Election Fund. The campaign filed its first report on December 7, 2021, requesting $38,641.69 in public matching funds, which have now been disbursed to the campaign.

“When I decided to run for county council, I knew right away that I wanted to participate in public finance. This campaign is not about corporate PACs, lobbyists, or special interests. It’s about representing the community I have served for over 20 years. It’s about putting our community over politics and bringing true local representation to my district.”

To qualify, candidates must raise $10,000.00 from 125 Montgomery County residents. They are not allowed to accept any contributions from PACs, Unions, and Corporations. They are also only allowed to take contributions up to $250.00.

Overall, the Lazo campaign said they have raised over $16,000 and 180 donations since launching their campaign at the end of July 2021. Of that, $13,553.23 came from 151 county residents, about 85% of the campaign’s donor base as of December 7th.

“I want to personally thank all my supporters for making this happen,” continued Lazo. This is a true grassroots campaign, and public financing makes it possible for those in Montgomery County who believe that they do not have a voice to run for public office. It allows everyone to participate even if you don’t have deep pockets.”

Lazo is running to represent newly drawn District 6 on the Montgomery County Council. He is a father with three children in Montgomery County Public Schools, a small business owner, and community leader. He is running to represent ALL members of the community. Lazo believes in true local representation and that his decades of advocacy for his community makes him best qualified to understand their needs.
