Omar Lazo To Announce Candidacy For Montgomery County Council - Campaign Press Release

July 17, 2021 - SPM News

For Immediate Release

Silver Spring, MD: Silver Spring resident Omar Lazo will announce tomorrow that he will run for Montgomery County Council in District 4. The seat is currently held by term-limited Councilmember Nancy Navarro.

Lazo, 44, is a husband, father to three daughters, small business owner, activist, and community leader with over 30 years in the community. He recently was appointed to the Montgomery County College Board of Trustees by Governor Hogan and previously sat on the board of the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee and Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce. He is also on the Board of Workforce Development for Montgomery County. As the President of the Latino Restaurant Association, his help was vital in the survival of many small businesses.

“As we head into a post-COVID Montgomery County,  we need leaders who understand the needs of the community,” said Omar Lazo. “The COVID-19 Pandemic has shown us how disastrous inequity can be to different communities. District 4 was one of the hardest-hit areas in the entire state. District 4 has been my home for over 32 years. I have advocated for redevelopment, pedestrian safety, equity in education, food insecurity, small business representation, and many other issues. My community has asked me to run to represent them, and I am honored today to try to make that happen.”

The campaign will be participating in the Montgomery County Public Election Fund option. This means that campaigns will not be able to accept contributions from unions, PACs, or corporations. In order to qualify, the campaign must collect a minimum of 125 contributions from county residents with an aggregate total of $10,000. Only contributions from county residents will be matched.

Lazo will be hosting a campaign launch in Wheaton on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Unplugged Restaurant and Sports Bar. The primary election is on June 28, 2022.
